About
Lai Zhigang, also known as Yunzen, is a modern Chinese ink wash landscape artist. He was born in 1963 in Bengbu, Anhui Province, and is a second-generation successor of Li Keran and a member of the China Artists Association. At the age of 12, he studied under the local painter Ding Chucai. In 2001, he enrolled in the Chinese Painting Department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 2002, he was admitted to the graduate class of the “Jia Youfu Studio” at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, where he followed the academy’s guidance system for copying, sketching, and creating, earning support and high praise from Jia Youfu. In 2005, he joined the “Li Xiaoke Art Studio” at the Beijing Painting Academy, and based on the grand, powerful, and profound landscape painting style inherited from the Li family, he pioneered a new style of ink wash landscape painting. With creativity and unique characteristics, he has to some extent broken through modern landscape painting techniques and has won the China Art Gold Award.
Lai Zhigang is gaining attention in today’s landscape painting world because he diligently studies the essence of traditional painting and possesses creative and unique expressions. Jia Youfu commented, “Lai Zhigang’s works have explosive power, and the unique tension and impact of the painting leave a lasting impression.” Lai Zhigang said, “I always believe that accumulated ink can best express the volume, mass, structure, and overlapping space of Chinese landscapes. It also carries weight and momentum, with the reality and potential to infinitely expand the humanities and time-space.”
